For a while, I toyed with the idea of combining the two. What if we could combine the German idea of rounded sans with the Eurostile Candy idea of making a sans serif that is even more rounded?
The first step was to design the letterforms. I should tell you that I have always had a weakness for rounded letters, and I find even the upright figures quite easy to design. I would start the exercise by sketching the vertical strokes, and then the rounded endings. The designer of the first version of the Sans Pro rounded family (which is incidentally based on the serif version of the same family, in fact) was Erik Spiekermann. He drew the first version of the Sans, and I completed it. I also drew the first letters of Sans Pro, which are based on the first round sans letters I drew.
I then turned my attention to the letterforms of the Akko Pro rounded family, which is based on Sans Pro. Here, we had the advantage of having the Akko Pro font, which was immediately released in 2010. I had it in hand, and I started to make the Akko Pro rounded font. What I ended up with was a very rounded sans serif, with a few corrections to solve a few remaining problems with the Akko Pro font. When I had the first version of Akko Pro, I showed it to Erik, who liked it very much. He was particularly pleased with the Akko Pro italic version.
The second step was to develop the Akko Pro fonts. You see, I had first started with the Sans Pro font, then turned to Akko Pro. But I had never done any redesigning with a font like this. I had not included any italic characters. I had tried to keep the Akko Pro rounded family monospaced. The family was very short in its family coverage; it had just 11 weights.
I wanted to design a typeface that resembled a sans serif. The counters are light and wide, but still had the character of a sans serif font. That is why I wanted to draw a typeface with a strong vertical axis, with very light, thin, wide counters. If we take a closer look at the family of sans serif typefaces that were popular in the 1990s, we can see that they were generally very heavy. The counters of Akko Pro and Akko Rounded are pretty light -- 0.6 to 0.8 point.
If we take a closer look at the round sans typefaces of the 1980s, there are three main characteristics. First, the counters are very open, in many cases the whole width of the x-height. They are the most typical counter of Akko Pro, the most powerful sans of this typeface, and the preferred one of Akko Pro Rounded. Second, the capitals are very light and pointy, and the lowercase letters are cut quite narrow, with rounded corners.
