Although the opening titles states that the film is a remake of the Eagle Express, it's obvious this isn't the case. This film is about nothing else but fighting and cool moves. This film is one of my most favored examples of a martial arts film for its action and sheer entertainment value. This movie is very entertaining and has almost all the elements that make a martial arts movie. It is also one of Chang Cheh's better films.
This is one of Chang Cheh’s most exciting sword and spear films. It’s got lots of fight sequences, with a great array of techniques and choreography. It’s visually breathtaking and the pacing is exceptional. Sadly, this movie was never released to home video in Hong Kong. In the United States, it was released by the American company, Golden Harvest.
This movie also features two of Chang Cheh’s two great film stars, Yang Kuei Fei and Fei Mu. By the time they were cast, they were too old to be teenagers and so were portrayed as young martial artists. Their presence is a reminder of martial arts movies of the pre-digital era. Fei and Yang appear to have been involved in a back and forth, with Yang giving the impression of being a living statue and Fei Mu being equally competent in hand to hand, regardless of his stature. Fei Mu is also featured in a fight scene where the entire sequence is shot in a single close up. This is his first appearance in a Chang Cheh movie and it shows. Despite being in the film for two or three minutes, he is never seen in a full shot. In the single tracking shot, it is the actor who is the focal point and everything else „paints” around. The result is monolithic.
