Just as the drug business in Rockstar couldn't function without a corrupt and exploitative police force to protect their supply lines, the B-movie business in Hammer wouldn't be able to get off the ground without the police cooperating with organized crime. The cops in question are a pair of NYPD officers, Frankie Savage (Patton) and Corky Reilly (Barry Pepper), who are brought in to take on the case of a local girl murdered in a potentially mob-connected double homicide. The cops are given a new lead when a waitress claims she saw the killers leave the restaurant in a car with a battered and abandoned black Chevrolet Chevelle. But as the cops start to dig deeper into the mob's involvement, they find that the girl was not the only casualty of the night, and the mob has a range of other reasons for wanting to get rid of the cops.
Hammer isn't quite the classic crime thriller of the past, but it may be the closest thing the genre has produced in recent years. It's a film that starts and stops during the first 60 minutes, and the only thing left to do when a random sequence ends is to go back and look for the next one. But the movie never gets bogged down by any of the cliches that have plagued the genre, nor does it get bogged down in any of the problems that plague the genre these days. The script is very tight, and the movie's solid story structure makes it feel almost like an Agatha Christie novel. But the movie was also made on a modest budget, and that shows in the details like the nightmarish opening sequence that establishes the movie's troubled and troubled protagonist, and the late-night conversation that serves as its prologue.
As in Murphy's Bad Day at Black Rock, the movie lacks a single shot of a car driving down the road, but it does have a few effective sequences of modern-day stalking, and it makes good use of the farmhouse where the girl's murder occurs.
MGM's DVD comes with a fine audio commentary track by Hammer editor and producer Mike Labeski. Labeski was responsible for some of the finest genre DVDs of the aughts, including the New Line Night Raiders, which featured the directorial debut of Kevin Smith. The commentary here is worth a listen, as Labeski is a thoughtful participant who provides a great deal of detail on the making of the movie.
