Bumpy is not a bad director, but he has an interesting idea in his head. In the best Bollywood tradition, the film is a love story that has no love in it. Its an affair, a whirlwind affair, and it tells us the story of how a guy falls in love with a girl in a week. Its a romance that has no romance in it. Theres nothing like a Bollywood gangster-thriller-romance-comedy-nonsense like this in any Indian film till date. It's LUV KA THE END.
With its first 30 minutes, its first half hour, it is a good thing that Bumpy is not serious about his script. This is not about a relationship, it is all about a relationship, and it's about a relationship between a college boy and a college girl (hereafter, CM&SM) and how the former tries to impress the latter. An end-of-year-fun-fest indeed. Talking about the characters, the last image we get is that of a guy on an elephant. At the end of the film, we are asked to accept that the film has a message. The film has a lesson to impart. And the last message it gives is this : If you have a problem, go on social networking sites; post a status and cry.
Bumpy's film gets away with it because of his visual style and approach. He doesn't over-romanticize the leads, or go overboard about the stories. The visuals is the way he shows how the protagonists' lives are played out. From an eight-year-old kid's perspective, this is what life feels like, one long, never-ending tennis match. His carefree, unaffected, energetic approach to the storytelling is the game changer. It has a different feel of what it means to be a kid. Its something that makes you root for these two kids to win the battle against the forces of evil. Thats the key to what the movie talks about. It doesn't talk to the lofty world of love and relationships. It talks about a world that every kid has been a part of, and that theyre better off having been in this world.
