The voice replies are a great addition. I personally don't care to use them for the reasons you stated. The only problem I had with the voice replies in the original version was that they were too personalized to me. It's not bad, but not good either. It may be that these new ones are equally personalized, and in that case it will be very good.
Yes, that's right! Adding voice commands doesn't break the way you navigate. It's the same as the way you are currently using it. You can still zoom in/out, move the map, zoom in/out when using the voice directions - it's the same experience and you don't need to do anything different.

Yes it does, it's just the point I'm making is that they are free to download if you want them so they are completely optional. A nice thing about them is that you don't have to use the in-app shop to download them you can just do it from your mobile browser. Also the voice alerts will be coming to iGO.
Oddly, the people who write this feature have never actually used the new voices. It's the job of a traffic reporter to be able to correctly identify a car and to report it, so we know that we can read a license plate. It's the job of a voice actor to impersonate one's self. Usually, we aren't expected to remember the voice for any particular person, because the people who write these things are already familiar with the voices. If they were to call me to voice an app, I'd need to be expected to remember the voice for someone I haven't heard in a while.

But this new system is brand new. No one is expected to remember these new voices. You're just going to hear a voicemail greeting, and you'll have to record a message. So far, we've received ten different voicemail messages in the first 24 hours.
