In the Western tradition, almost all folk songs are narrative, and most feature love or loss. A part of each narrative is the poetic dialogue of the characters, and its effect is a parallel dialogue between the singer and the song. Frequently, the poetic dialogue is in the person of a shepherd or a farmer, who is being courted or wooed. The tension between the poetic dialogue and the tune comes in the form of a song within a song, and in the form of a refrain, as in much popular music. In some traditional ballads, the dialogues are of a tragic nature. One of the best-known songs of this type is the ballad of Tom of Bedlam, a tale of a madman who manages to perform feats of magic, and of his matricide. Ancient Greek folk songs also feature love or mourning.
The first literary folk songs, of the most familiar kind, are the dithyrambs and lyric poems of Homer. Both of these may be regarded as ballads in the sense that they are narrative, usually in dialogue, and frequently use a refrain. They also feature a poetic dialogue between the singer and the song. Their lyrics can be as short as a single verse, as long as the same narrative is recited over and over, as in the Odyssey, or as complex as the Iliad.
