In 1979, the General Assembly adopted a programme of activities to be undertaken during the second half of the Decade for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination. On that occasion, the General Assembly decided that a week of solidarity with the peoples struggling against racism and racial discrimination, beginning on 21 March, would be organized annually in all States.
The United Nations has been concerned with this issue since its foundation and the prohibition of racial discrimination is enshrined in all core international human rights instruments. It places obligations on States and tasks them with eradicating discrimination in the public and private spheres. The principle of equality also requires States to adopt special measures to eliminate conditions that cause or help to perpetuate racial discrimination.
International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances.
The 4th Year 5K is a longstanding UVA tradition presented by the Peer Health Educators to promote a community of care. Given this week's tragic events, this mission is more important than ever. Whether choosing to register, or just show up, all members of the UVA and Charlottesville community are invited to join us on the South Lawn on November 19th at our new start time of 9:00am.
The 4th Year 5K is a beloved UVA tradition that has historically occurred on the morning of the last home football game. The race is held in memory of Leslie Baltz, a UVA student who passed away due to high-risk drinking. The race aims to create a positive tradition where students can safely come together and make lasting memories. We are excited to honor Leslie Baltz, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UVA Leslie Baltz Art Study Fund. This year we are also honoring the students and families and entire University community which has been impacted by this week's tragic events. 2b1af7f3a8
