But Netflix has also been looking to make video game adaptations of its biggest franchises. The Stranger Things 3 (opens in new tab) game will be getting a release on Nintendo Switch this June, so the panel will be well-timed to talk about plans for other popular Netflix Originals titles. Could we see games based on Orange is the New Black, or, (shudder) Sex Education?
The Netflix panel shows that E3 can still hold sway with content providers, and possibly marks a shift in tone for the expo going forward. As TV becomes increasingly interactive, could we start seeing demos of interactive shows appearing at places like E3 before they launch? Either way, it looks like streaming platforms will be an increasingly bigger presence in the world of games.
As Engadget reports(Opens in a new window), Musk sat down with Bethesda's Todd Howard for an E3 2019 chat and made a few gaming announcement for the touch screen Tesla vehicles all have mounted on the dash. They included the previously-announced Cuphead and Beach Buggy Racing 2, but Howard confirmed Bethesda is currently working on a version of Fallout Shelter for Tesla, so your little dwellers will "live in the car."
It's not just games coming to that touchscreen, though. Musk says streaming services will be available, too. So if you want to park and watch some YouTube videos, or stream a movie on Netflix, you'll soon be able to. How soon? That we don't know yet, or indeed when these games will launch for your car.
As our team is talking to developers and gathering impressions they also will be giving nominations for our TechRaptor Best of E3 award. You can find tweets and images from all of the Nominees as well as the Winners.
"[Psychological horror] is still in our DNA," Babieno says. "We still would like to have this taste of making games, but we would like to tell our stories more with action. That's why our future projects will be more from the first-person perspective, like The Medium. We'll have much more advanced game mechanics."
"We've been having that conversation for three years," Babieno says. "Because we realized we're in a niche, and we would like to make that niche broader. Our future projects will not necessarily be horror games. They could be called thrillers. We're much broader with The Medium and the stuff we're trying to do in the future.
"Of course we have some core fans that come back to our games because they're Bloober Team productions, but it's all about having a unique selling proposition," Babieno says. "If you could offer something different from what is on the market, there's much more of a chance that people will take a look at it. Because gamers could choose more than just games. They could choose Netflix TV shows, graphic novels, or spending time on social networks with friends. So we're not competing with other horror game producers; I would say we're competing for the time of gamers."
While some industry-watchers have expressed skepticism about the long-term effect of Game Pass and how the "Netflix-for-games" subscription model could hurt developers, Babieno says he sees no downsides to it. It also didn't hurt that when Blair Witch launched into Game Pass, Microsoft gave it a marketing push including a reveal trailer during its E3 2019 stage show.
In 2012 CD Projekt RED announced they had partnered with Mike Pondsmith and acquired the licence for a video game set in the Cyberpunk pen & paper world. In early 2013 the title reveal and teaser trailer were shown to attract talent to start development of the game. The world premier was shown at E3 2018, where viewers got a first glimpse at gameplay. The next year at E3 2019, Keanu Reeves was announced to play Johnny Silverhand as well as showing off a cinematic trailer depicting the events of the prologue. CD Projekt Red later showed more gameplay at Gamescom 2019 as well as announcing a release date for April 2020. In January 2020 it was announced the game had been delayed to September, then November 2020. Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, the 2020 conventions were cancelled and CDPR premiered Night City Wire, where new gameplay was shown as well as the announcements for the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Netflix anime and the Dark Horse Trauma Team comic. On October 5, 2020, Cyberpunk 2077's Twitter account confirmed the game officially finished development and has gone gold.[4]
It's clear that the company has come a long way from its grass roots beginnings, managing to sell millions of copies of its games, attract star power like Keanu Reeves, and take center stage at Microsoft's E3 conferences. In 2019, the developer had a massive E3 booth and press area with drinks, cosplayers, and immersive sets. It's a far cry from the studio's first E3 with The Witcher. Although the studio's image has been a bit tainted following the release of the very controversial Cyberpunk 2077, it's hard to imagine its next full game won't be yet another major industry talking point.
Vogt-Roberts is still in that Sisyphus push to make the film happen, but he acknowledges a big development was casting Isaac for the lead role. In 2019, the actor had fan cast himself during a Triple Frontier press junket. Vogt-Roberts says that was part of "a long distance courtship" going on between him and Isaac's agents. The director wanted the actor to play Solid Snake from the get-go, but Sony wasn't in a position to discuss casting for a while. That sound bite was like Isaac "sending smoke signals" to Vogt-Roberts.
A Uplay+ service launching on 3 September will let players access Ubisoft's library of games on Windows-powered personal computers, according to vice president of platform and product management Brenda Panagrossi.
Post-Brexit dystopiaAs the multi-billion dollar video game industry turns to streaming games the way Netflix does video or Apple Music does songs, a key will be fresh, captivating content to attract and keep subscribers, according to industry insiders. 2b1af7f3a8
