Yoshinobu Akita also illustrated Tanako's Chibi Maruko-Chan, which was serialized in the monthly manga magazine Shōjo Comic from 1992 to 1994. It was also adapted into a television anime series in the same year, which was broadcast on Fuji Television and affiliated TV stations.[7] As with Chibi Maruko-chan, Akita drew the manga using the rough pages he created with pencils, markers and other supplies. He then transferred the illustrations to digital screens. The series was serialized in the magazine Shōjo Comic from 1992 to 1994 and it was also broadcast on Fuji Television and affiliated TV stations from 1994 to 1996. Akita was nominated for an Anime Grand Prize in the Best Shōjo Manga category in 1994.[8]
Much of the humour in Chibi Maruko-chan is derived from the fact that Maruko's friends are so obsessed with the subject of boys, and are constantly hitting on them. Maruko herself has a crush on a boy, and is so obsessed with him that she has to be reassured that he likes her first before she can look at him. Moreover, her obsession with him is a source of comic relief, as she constantly comments on his appearance, insists that he like her, and worries that he will never notice her. Her friends are even more obsessed, and are constantly trying to set her up with boys. There is also an element of incongruity in the fact that Maruko, who is given to outbursts of laughter at the most inappropriate times, is so serious about boys. In addition, the title character is much smaller than her friends, and much of the humour stems from the fact that in order to see her face clearly, her friends have to bend down to look through a tiny hole in a block of wood.
