In two and a half innings of work, the ValleyCats (32-33) built a 4-0 lead, didn't allow a run and finished with a 8-0 advantage.

"It was a little different, but it's fun," said ValleyCats ace Brandon Moss. "We still had fun. We're a good team, and we're going to win a lot of games and you just have to stay within the confines of what we're doing.

"We took advantage of all the opportunities we had. We were lucky."

The ValleyCats used five pitchers, including starting pitchers Moss and Michael Brantley.

Moss, who threw six innings of one-run ball, went 3-for-5 with five strikeouts and a double. Brantley allowed three runs on four hits.

"You don't come in thinking you have to be the guy that shuts down the rally, but you have to be ready," Moss said. "I just wanted to be a part of the team, because we were playing well. We were having fun and I wanted to be a part of it."

Moss said his teammates provided him with a lot of confidence to pitch.

"When you give up a run, they tell you how great you are and how to get better," he said. "It builds confidence."

Fort Wayne (29-36) came to the plate three times. The TinCaps scored a run on an error and struck out in the other two at-bats.

"I thought (Moss) had good control," TinCaps manager Randy Ready said. "He didn't make a lot of mistakes.

"We didn't think we had a chance tonight. It was supposed to be a series win, then it was a win, then we've got to go home and keep playing hard. The league is getting tougher and tougher. It comes down to at least hitting when you're down."
