When I started to develop Mr. Kat & Friends, I was very shy and I started to feel very insecure about my career and how people would perceive me. I felt like an impostor who would never be accepted in my community. The first thing I did was to create a character for myself and my fears. Mr. Kat is a character that is very shy and very vulnerable, but he is also the only character who speaks about his fears. I think it is easier to be vulnerable when you have an alter ego and you can talk about it. If we all start to talk about our fears, people will realize that they are not alone and they might find a way to overcome them, instead of hiding them.
Prince's mother, Faye, was the inspiration for Camille and Vanity 6,[2] and Prince revealed that he has actually worked with both of them over the years.[2][15] Camille is also seen in a cameo in the 1989 movie Under the Cherry Moon, a film directed by Prince about a rock star with a monstrous alter-ego.[19] It features two characters who appear to be clones of Camille, but are portrayed by male actors, played by Prince and Alan Leeds.[10]
Prince had developed a large catalogue of song ideas for Camille. He spent a long time creating the songs and developing the characters she would sing, based on his earlier alter egos.[9] He felt that he could not do this for a new persona because he had so many expectations for her.
During the months that followed, Mr. Kat also became a character with thoughts, feelings, very big personalities, but it was a character that was more like an alter ego, more than a character that was created to interact. It became my alter ego.
