Over the years, the album has been the subject of various controversies, most notably the cover art, and both Kweli and Mos Def have taken repeated shots at each other’s releases, as well as the hip-hop community as a whole. But the release of Elegant Ladies & Gentlemen, The Ghetto Boy in 1999 was a turning point for both rappers. This album, the first ever to be released by Mos Def’s label Soul Space Music , helped to establish him as the forefront of conscious rap. With its exquisite production and introspective lyricism, Elegant Ladies & Gentlemen, The Ghetto Boy is a classic. Mos Def’s most commercially successful release, it was certified platinum by the RIAA after selling 400,000 copies in the U.S. alone. The following year, Mos Def would release Black on Both Sides, an album that focused more on political content and social issues.
