There would be three more American Ninja movies released in 1988, 1989, and 1993, each of declining quality and each featuring declining quantities of Steve James and Michael Dudikoff, but despite ending with a whimper and not a bang, the American Ninja movies are the only Cannon movies with licensed merchandise like action figures, suction cup throwing stars, and plastic ninja swords.

The Annihilation has the best villain of the series with James Booth wonderfully nasty as Mulgrew, the monster who takes pleasure in torturing and killing people while wanting to nuke New York. He is so hateful that every moment he is on screen makes your blood boil. The final battle between he and Sean is incredibly satisfying although I think in terms of the series best kill that honour goes to Joe who fights the main ninja henchman then drops a grenade on him.

Joe (Michael Dudikoff!) is an American soldier with amnesia who can only remember one thing: how to kick ass using the deadly martial arts of the ninja. Which is convenient since his Army base is located next door to a black market arms dealer who has his own army of evil ninjas.

And it's got some pretty stiff competition on all sides. "Kung Pow: Enter The Fist", for example. Shaolin Soccer, "Battlefield Baseball", and a handful of other movies just like them have flooded video store shelves in recent years. Hordes of Japanese imports and a handful of American titles have all gone after the rank of funniest ninja movie.

Okay, plain and simple. "Irish American Ninja" is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. It's packed to the gills with parody, clever scripting, excellent acting, and all kinds of surprises. It encompasses so much more than any simple ninja movie has a right to--"Irish American Ninja" is really like "Enter the Dragon" on crack, and without all the stylistic overtones. The sheer ambition of "Irish American Ninja" is what gives it a lot of its comedic appeal. 2b1af7f3a8
